Once your swarm reaches a certain level of advancement you can choose to ascend (at Hatchery 40 or Expansion 80). Ascending sends a small amount of larvae to a new world to start anew. This completely restarts your swarm's development, but also activates any Mutagen you have earned, allowing you to buy Mutations.

Initially, Ascension costs a massive amount of energy to perform. This amount decreases as you spend energy on other abilities or units.

Ascension

At some point of spending your energy decreasing of the ascension cost becomes equal to energy you spend, then decreasing/spent ratio becomes lower and lower. So if you want to ascend as fast as possible, it's best to do at the point of equal decreasing/spent. This point is (roughly): 310k energy spent, 70k to ascend. With the Lepid mutation maxed out it changes to: 480k spent, 90k to ascend. You may check current ratio by buying 1 lepid or nightbug and checking the difference on mutagen tab.

Ascended

Swarm Simulator Evolution

Ascending is slightly different in Swarm Simulator Evolution. You still gain mutagen from Hatcheries and Expansions, but to ascend you must also gain Rocket Fuel, a waste product gained each time you use an ability. Clicking on gold bugs also rarely gives Rocket Fuel. The amount of rocket fuel needed to ascend increases by 50 each time the swarm ascends. (Since ascension is travel to another planet, it seems that each time your swarm travels to another planet, the distance between planets gets larger.)
